Autumn 2020
This magazine lands in your inbox at a very strange period in all of our lives, I want to start with a message from our Chairman, Steve Cannon.
"We are travelling through unprecedented times. No-one has experienced the medical and social disruption that has been caused by Covid-19 both in the UK and worldwide. As Chair of Skeletal Cancer Trust I would like to express on behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself our continued support and thanks for all the medical, nursing and ancillary staff as they face the deluge of problems they encounter. Our support as well particularly for our patients who are so vulnerable, together with their whole families. The national lock down has inevitably resulted in changes in our fundraising but may I thank all those who continue to support us as we look forward to the return of normality. Everyone please stay safe.”
Christmas 2019
It has been another great year here at SCT and I decided what better time than now to list some of our incredible achievements, which has included: a name change and re-brand; the launch of the ‘SCT Hour’; a Halloween fundraiser; ‘Merry Christmas Deer’ Christmas cards; 10 amazing finishers in the London Landmarks Half Marathon; 36 finishers in the Thames Bridges Walk; Steve Cannon’s interview with the BBC; the official opening of the Stanmore Building; donations from Bowls Clubs, Golf Clubs, bake sales and table top sales; the exciting launch of the ‘survivorship after musculoskeletal cancer’ project; the appointment of a MSK Pathology Project Manager; continued support for amputees through the ‘live life to the full’ campaign and yoga, to name a few!

Summer 2019
Spring to Summer has been so busy. We have some really exciting announcements including an imminent name change, a new logo and our very own radio show and podcast! We are in the process of changing our name to the Skeletal Cancer Trust – SCT – by the time you read the Autumn newsletter we will have unveiled our new logo which is very very exciting. I hope the transition will not be too confusing and that you will share my enthusiasm for change.
Spring 2019
Welcome to the Spring edition of the SCAT Newsletter - it is a wonderful time of year as the garden begins to bud with new life and everyone starts to emerge from inside their houses full of optimism for the coming months. Fundraising is much the same as the better weather brings more opportunity and enthusiasm for taking part in events. We are kicking off this year with the London Landmarks Half Marathon and our very own Mr Pollock will be taking part… with the added excitement of racing his brother!
December 2018
As ever September is a very busy fundraising month for SCAT. It is the month that I most look forward to in our calendar. We started things off with the Thames Bridges Trek, growing our team to 21 Participants this year – I really can’t recommend this event enough – I am very pleased to announce that together we raised over £12,000 which is absolutely fantastic. We walked this year in memory of Ellis Clark and Hannah Loughran.
Summer 2018
The month of July is known globally as Sarcoma Awareness Month and SCAT has been involved in trying to raise awareness by sharing inspiring stories from patients, health professionals and supporters. I will be sharing these articles over the coming months
in our newsletters. In this summer edition we read about an extremely brave young lady called Kim who, with help from SCAT, now has an upgraded limb, provided by our ‘Live Life to the Full’ campaign.
Spring 2018
Well, what a cold, long winter we have had?! By the time you read this I hope there are spring flowers bursting up everywhere and we can look towards warmer climates. For one of our supporters, the long cold winter has meant that she has had to do all of her training for the London Marathon through arctic conditions. You can read more about Sian in this edition of our newsletter but a huge big ‘good luck’ and ‘thank you’ from everyone here at SCAT!
December 2017
This month I write about the support of The Rotary Club of Canterbury, Sainsbury’s Superstore Canterbury and the MED Club Dinner and Dance and it is all tribute to a wonderful young lady, Hannah Loughran. Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for some of our readers and whilst we try hard to make it a happy time, there are lots of people who are terribly missed. I wanted to take the opportunity to dedicate this edition of the newsletter to Hannah who died on 29th November 2016 aged 27.
Summer 2017
I feel I am in a very fortunate position to have so much to report on in each newsletter. The last three months have been very busy as we gear up for the summer fundraising activities, always a busy time of the year for SCAT. We kick off with John Devaney’s annual ‘Thon’ event; Kate Brewer embarks on a half marathon; then onto the Thames Bridges Walk and the London to Brighton (places available for both events, read on for more information); Andy Keay is cycling London to Paris; and we have the annual Golf days to look forward to.
Spring 2017
Spring is always an exciting time of year in fundraising as we start to gear up to support and take part in all the activities stretching out over the year ahead. We kicked off with something quite spectacular, the SCAT Stars In Their Eyes event and as you continue to read this edition, take heed of a health warning - once seen this can never be unseen - as our wonderful consultants championed their inner girl-power, wow! This month Gaby kicks off our summer of sporting challenges by taking on all 26.2 miles of the London Marathon. Please join Team SCAT or encourage your friends and family to do so at the London to Brighton, London to Paris or Thames walking challenges.
